Chapter 7

Toussaint Louverture International Airport

Michaud and McCord walked along the convoy of Canadian Army Mercedes G-Wagons and the eight Piranha-Vs that the Romanians had put on loan to them. Four of the eight infantry fighting vehicles sported a 30mm remotely controlled cannon on their topsides, a level of firepower that would be far in excess of what McCord hoped his commandos would need. The black stenciled UN logos on each vehicle had been painted over in what looked to be slapdash fashion.

Each fighting machine would be driven by one of Michaud’s soldiers. They had been in-country going on five months and as a result, his people were much better prepared to navigate the janky and oft-times too narrow streets of Port-au-Prince. The ideal situation would have been for the Romanians to drive the Piranhas, but someone higher up the chain had ruled out that possibility, much to the disappointment of the on-the-ground Euro soldiers.

They stopped at a G-Wagon parked between a pair of the hulking Piranhas. Michaud, kitted up in his full battle armor and sporting a Sig Sauer 226 on his hip, jumped into the driver seat, while McCord settled into the shotgun position to his right. Absent a turret, in the backseat were three JTF-2 commandos. They wore the secretive unit’s customized kit, including night-vision goggles atop each of their helmets. Their faces were devoid of emotion. In total, some ninety-three of Canada’s most highly trained soldiers would assault the Alpha-7 compound, with a hundred of Michaud’s Vandoos being held in reserve.

Beside him, McCord said, “Open channel, Task Force Gamma.”

Less than a second later, Michaud’s earbud came alive, and he could hear the colonel speaking in his ear. With no delay between McCord’s voice in the earbud and the man seated beside him, he decided he could manage the two points of communication.

Canada's regular army regiments hadn’t yet been issued the Battle Area Management system or BAM as yet, so he, and those of his soldiers who would drive the commandos, had received a crash course on how the near-AI-facilitated comms system worked. Of the full BAM kit, they had only received the earbuds, so they could only listen to McCord and his soldiers as they communicated or issued orders. If Michaud and his drivers needed to communicate amongst themselves, they would do it via the tried-and-true radios in each of the vehicles. He checked his watch. It was just after 0100 hours.

“Alright, everyone, you know the plan,” said McCord. “Lead vehicle, you’re a go for Waypoint Gamma. Move.”

Instantly, Michaud heard the rumble of the convoy elevate as drivers shifted the transmission of their vehicles into drive and began to move forward.

If all went according to plan, they would hit Waypoint Gamma in twelve minutes and then the Alpha-7 compound in another twenty. As the eight-wheeled Piranha in front of him began to move, he shifted their G-Wagon into drive and in a low voice said, “Hold on, Vee. We’re coming for you.”

Operation Caribbean Payback was officially underway.
